Magic of Gen AI Filmmaking?
As a filmmaker in the rapidly evolving landscape of digital media, I've been closely following the developments in generative AI, particularly Runway's software and its impact on video production. The advancements are impressive, to say the least, but it's important to approach this new technology with both excitement and a critical eye.
Runway and similar Gen AI tools are making significant strides in the filmmaking world. However, the practical applications still have room for growth. One of the most challenging aspects is translating the vision in your mind into a tangible output. This process often requires numerous prompt iterations, and the results can be unpredictable.
That being said, when Gen AI succeeds, it truly shines. There are moments when the software delivers imaginative visuals that exceed your initial concept.
While image generation tools like Midjourney are approaching photorealism, video outputs tend to have a more “dreamy” quality. Successful AI-generated videos embrace this dreamlike aesthetic, turning a current limitation into a stylistic choice.
To illustrate the potential of Gen AI in bringing concepts to life, let me share a personal project.
Years ago, I developed an idea for an animated series: a Japanese school for young Kaiju – essentially, Godzilla meets Harry Potter. While I had created a cartoon pitch deck, the concept didn't come to life. Today, I was able to breathe life into this idea, creating a teaser trailer that, while not perfect, captured the essence of my vision.
This experience highlights one of the most exciting aspects of Gen AI in filmmaking: its ability to transform abstract ideas into reality.
That’s a little bit of magic.
